#OnTheList with Xtine is a weekly feature from Fresh 102.7’s Christine Richie that will be highlighting all things music and more, from her favorite emerging artists, top female vocalists, and much, much more!
I’ve said this many times before but it’s worth repeating: Ingrid Michaelson is one of our favorites. She’s a Staten Island girl at heart who lives in Brooklyn and listens to Fresh 102.7. She’s always done shows for us, swings by for interviews, and has that kind of personality that makes everyone want to be around her. She’s honest, funny, smart, talented, and someone who would be a blast to go drinking with.
We all know that she’s a fantastic songwriter and singer, but she’s always been interested in acting; she studied musical theater in college. She’s also been shopping around a TV show about her life, which she describes as similar to a Curb Your Enthusiasm style scripted show. No official word on that yet, but Ingrid’s about to make her feature film debut in a movie called Humor Me where she plays a musician. She wasn’t just handed the part because of who she is, auditioning for the role and nailing it! It’s set for a December release. If her videos are any indication of her acting skills, I think she’ll be fantastic.
This got me thinking though about other artists who made the transition into acting and didn’t suck. There are a few obvious ones: Cher, Janet Jackson, Queen Latifah, Ice-T, and L.L. Cool J. Here are a few that maybe don’t come to mind.
It seems like Justin Timberlake can do anything. He’s my favorite host on SNL and guest on the Tonight Show. When he gets together with Jimmy Fallon, a viral video is guaranteed. His acting did start off a little rough though; I think he’s gotten better and thought he was good in The Social Network, Bad Teacher, and Friends with Benefits. Next up is the Trolls movie, even though it’s just voice acting. The movie is set for a November release and already gave us the song of the summer “Can’t Stop the Music.” He’s also working with Woody Allen so if Woody thinks he’s good enough to put in a movie, I can’t argue with that.
Ed Sheeran has said on many occasions that he’d like to act and has shown off his skills doing accents and impressions in interviews. His first official acting gig was the Watchtower short (above). It wasn’t a speaking role but he does pretty good job at dying.
Oh sorry, spoiler alert!
Next up was The Bastard Executioner. Not sure why this show was so terrible but I’d have to say Ed did what he could with his role as Sir Cormac. Although, it’s tough for me to see him playing a bad guy because he’s so sweet in person. He’s also going to be in the upcoming Bridget Jone’s Baby, so we’ll have to wait and see how that goes. Judging by this clip it may be a blink and you’ll miss his cameo but any chance I get to see Ed makes me happy. I wouldn’t care about this movie otherwise, so great casting on their part.
There was never a question that Adam could act. All of his performances are very theatrical. He was fantastic in Glee. Next up, following in the footsteps of Meatloaf, Lambert will play Eddie in the remake of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, set to air October 20th on Fox. If there ever was a part he was born to play, that would be it. I think Lambert can pretty much do anything he sets his mind to and I guarantee we’ll keep seeing more and more of him. I’m sure we’ll keep hearing from him as well.
This one is a reminder to believe in yourself no matter what. Jennifer Hudson‘s story should give anyone hope who has failed at anything. I think we all first heard of her on American Idol back in 2004. There is no denying she has an incredible voice, but she didn’t win; she finished in 7th place.
The best way to recover from that? Going on to win The Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Effie White in Dreamgirls. Oh and it’s worth mentioning that she also has a Grammy. She’s proven her talent as a singer and actress many times over. Could you imagine if she let American Idol discourage her?
Who can forget the first time you saw Helena Christensen frolicking on the beach in just a pair of mens underwear with Chris Isaak? A beautifully shot, artistic, black and white video for the song that put him on the map, “Wicked Game.” I was smitten. He was sexy and that voice!
Who knew he was also incredibly funny. Do you remember him singing “Smelly Cat” with Phoebe on Friends? There was also The Chris Isaak Show from 2001-2004 which was very successful. Maybe not too much of a stretch since he played an exaggerated version of himself, but he’s also been on Twin Peaks (above), Hot in Cleveland, and has many other acting credits that make him worthy of this list.
Harry Connick Jr.
As someone who spends most of my Saturday’s watching Law and Order SVU marathons, I couldn’t leave out Harry. I think I’ve watched him more on TV than I’ve ever listened to his music. He completely creeped me out playing a serial killer in the movie Copycat, but also made me laugh on Will and Grace. He can pretty much do it all.
It’s no shock that Lady Gaga has made the transition into acting considering she approaches everything she does as performance art. Whether it’s wearing a meat dress or arriving on the red carpet in an egg/pod, she’s always acting when she’s “Lady Gaga.” She may have found the perfect part for her though when she landed a role in American Horror Story (above). She even snagged a Golden Globe for it. She was also hilarious on SNL. I’d say she’s right up there with Justin Timberlake.
I think she’s extremely talented and it’s clear she can act. I would like to see her go back to her roots and focus on music again. I think she got a little too caught up in the Lady Gaga persona and was always trying to outdo herself. It became a big distraction. It would be great if she would strip it all back and let her passion and amazing voice shine through once again.
