The International Spa Association (ISPA) is back in New York for their annual spa event and Deb Gordon spotlighted the organization with its President Lynne McNees.

The event, held at Gotham Hall will feature a selection of spas from around the world and highlight some of the hottest trends in spa and wellness, as well as disclose the results of ISPA’s research about the industry.

“We’re seeing a rise in all of the big 5 data points…everything is very positively trending for the spa industry, which is great news,” said McNees.

More people are discovering the benefits of spa and wellness treatments and incorporating them into their daily lives for overall better health and the data shows it works.

“The number one reason people go to a spa worldwide, is to learn how to manage their health and to manage their stress,” said McNees. “Spas keep people feeling healthy and feeling fit.”

New York’s Mandarin Oriental Spa is a regular at ISPA’s event, and is always coming up with new and innovative ways to help calm and relax New Yorkers and visitors alike.  Its latest offering is the very appropriately titled ‘Digital Detox’.

“We’re seeing a lot of technology in the industry,” said McNees.  “We’re all 24/7 connected… so we have to live with it, but we also need to learn how to balance it.”

So whether one is going to a destination spa, or visiting one of the express places in a mall or airport, the treatments are proven to reduce stress, which causes many maladies including high blood pressure.

“The spa industry gives you permission to pause… We do know that there are medical benefits to taking that time out…so even if you’re going to a day spa for an hour, anything helps, so take that time out,” said McNees.

In addition, ISPA also and provides educational and networking opportunities for those in the industry and will hold its annual expo in September in Las Vegas.

ISPA also provides scholarships to deserving students who are getting into the industry.
