WIN On Fresh: Kesha & Macklemore | Bon JoviMore »
By Christine Richie

#OnTheList with Xtine is a weekly feature from Fresh 102.7’s Christine Richie that will be highlighting all things music and more, from her favorite emerging artists, top female vocalists, and much, much more!

I absolutely love doing these Up Close & Personal Shows. It’s a chance to really get to know the artist’s personality and you hear the music in a way you haven’t before.

These shows are intimate with less than 100 people in the room. How often do you get to see your favorite artist in such a small space? If you haven’t been to one you have to try and win your way in next time! It’s really an experience you can’t get anywhere else. There are always special moments that happen and I’m going to try and bring you more of them. These happen to be my favorites so far this year.

Zella is lovely & very talented. I think all the guys at Fresh fell in love with her (right, EJ?). I really like her album Kicker, but my favorite song is “Jameson.” It’s about the whiskey and trying to love someone who has a problem with it. Her voice is beautiful and hearing it live nearly broke my heart. Keep your eye on this one, I think her future is very bright.

There was also a cool moment during soundcheck when she started playing “The Man Who Sold the World” by David Bowie. I wish I thought to take out my camera and start recording, but I always feel bad doing that. I feel like at soundcheck it’s understood it’s only for those in the room. A few of us tried to convince her to play it. She said she would but the key was too low for her.

It was nice to see a young new artist paying tribute to such a legend. She did say she was thinking about adding a Bowie song to her set. Not sure if she has but I think she would definitely do it justice.

This was a tough interview. They are really nice guys who I think like making music more than they like talking about it. Nathan is also very intelligent and I was a little intimidated talking with him. I saw that he had a funny side and I really wanted to bring that out.

Luckily, this fun little moment happened. They were playing Coachella and were excited about the Guns N’ Roses reunion. I asked what GN’R song they would cover and he said “Patience.” He said he could play it in high school and it was possible he could play it now. The audience and I put the pressure on him and finally picked up the guitar. He decided to do the whistle solo and it turned out it wasn’t so easy. Everyone was laughing, including him, so I considered that a little victory that day.

This was one of our best UCAP events and he is now my favorite person to interview. He is awesome. Crazy talented, but also a great all around guy. You can tell his mind is constantly going and once you put a guitar in his hands he will play until someone tells him to stop and takes it away.

Usually artists do a short soundcheck and go back into the green room to relax before we start. Brendon sat on stage and continued to play covers from Weezer and Taylor Swift to the Outfield and the Eagles. It happened again as we were getting the cameras set to record the interview. This time it was one of his songs – “Death of a Bachelor” – and we got it on tape!

I had this idea for a while and was just waiting for the right artist to pull it off. He was totally game and completely nailed it! We laughed a lot after it was done and I got to be really close to him, which was a pretty sweet bonus.

This is how I like to get Up Close & Personal! @panicatthedisco #freshupclose

Seeing the softer side of Goo Goo Dolls

This is the first time I’ve spoken to John since he’s gotten sober. He’s like a different person. He’s always been nice but this time he was lighter, more open and funny! I never noticed these qualities before. I also never took him to be a family guy but he talked about wanting kids. I had the pleasure of seeing a very cute moment between Robbie’s daughter and John. He went over to her and asked if she was ready to sing. He said he couldn’t and she needed to fill in. She beamed and giggled as she said she couldn’t. He kept saying but you have to save the show you’re the only one who can do it. I could see that not only is he ready to be a Dad but he’ll be a great one.

Another adorable thing she did was cling to Robbie as he was playing during soundcheck. She was literally hugging his arm. Such a sweet display of daughter’s love for her Daddy who’s probably on the road more than she would like. Sorry no photos of this because children are off limits as far as I’m concerned.

I love this photo; not only because of the smile on John’s, face but because of what made it happen. They hadn’t played the new songs much live yet, so they were still trying to work that out. They practiced a lot to get those songs right.

During the performance the new songs went off without a hitch, but when they sang “Broadway,” Johnny screwed up in one spot and it made him laugh. That’s the moment I caught. After the show he said, “I can’t believe I did that.”

Nobody cared. We all laughed and had a great time.
