When one of music’s own passes away, there’s no end to the artists and musicians who pay tribute to them through song. Peter Gabriel decided to do just that to honor Muhammad Ali. He released a new song “I’m Amazing” today (June 16), and he shared that the boxing legend helped inspire it.
On his Facebook page, Gabriel wrote about the song, “I wrote a song a few years back – ‘I’m Amazing’, which was, in part, inspired by Muhammad Ali’s life and struggles and at the time of his death, when so many people are celebrating his life and thinking about all he achieved, it seemed the right time to release it.”
The taut song contains an underlying heaviness that bubbles to the surface through strange, almost demonic noises. At over seven minutes, Gabriel takes listeners on a true journey, venturing from sound to sound but managing to connect them all so that cacophony becomes commendation.
“Please help me, something’s gotta change/ There was something that you said/ Happy times ahead, happy times ahead,” Gabriel sings in the opening minutes before the song breaks off into an affected guitar riff and big drums.
