This Week On FM Magazine: Queens Named 2015 Top Tourist Destination

Queens Borough President Melinda Katz was Deb Gordon’s guest to spotlight Queens and its distinction as the best United States tourist destination for 2015 according to Lonely Planet’s Annual Survey. Ms. Katz who still resides in the same Forest Hills home she grew up in 50 years ago, expressed great pride and love for the borough acclaimed as a melting pot with great restaurants, art, multi-cultural festivals, beaches and a booming tech industry.

Ms. Katz provided insight into some of the great reasons to visit Queens, which boasts the east coast’s only open air movie studio, and is notorious for its diverse and charming neighborhoods filled with ethnic flair, fashion and food. The Borough President also talked about the Borough’s many historical sites and attractions including world class museums, the Queens Botanical Gardens, The Louis Armstrong and Bowne Houses, and The New York Hall of Science.

Economic and cultural explosion does not come without challenges, and Ms. Katz shared some of her concerns about issues like affordable housing and lack of transportation. “We need to create housing that folks can afford to live in… We have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, but no ferry to get there,” stated Katz. The Borough President was also sanguine and vowed to work with the city and the state to help overcome those challenges. “We’re excited about the future and the opportunities…families from all over the world fight like crazy just to bring their children to Queens and to raise their families there and I think it’s our job to create the infrastructure to keep them there,” Katz stated.

Borough President Katz proclaims Queens “The World’s Borough” and has embarked on a marketing campaign to spread the word. The borough’s 2015 top destination status and recent accolades from other media outlets will help bring visitors to the borough, not only from other parts of the city, but from across the country. “If you go to New York City, you’ve got to go to Queens,” Katz said. “From my perspective, if you haven’t seen the borough, you haven’t seen New York.”
