Deb Gordon’s guests were Robert Gebbia CEO and Christine Moutier, Chief Medical Officer at The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) which is the largest national non-profit dedicated to preventing and understanding suicide through research and education. AFSP was founded in part by families who lost someone to suicide and felt they could not get good information about why they lost their loved ones; and also by scientists who felt there was not enough support for research into the causes of suicide and how to prevent it.
Mr. Gebbia and Ms. Moutier provided data about suicide and how it impacts young adults, teenagers, all races and economic groups. Also discussed were the many programs and services in place to help the families of suicide victims as well as those in place to help those who have attempted suicide prevent a second attempt. Mr. Gebbia and Ms. Moutier also discussed the Foundation’s efforts to improve media coverage of suicides in light of many high profile suicides including that of Mick Jagger’s longtime companion fashion designer L’Wren Scott.
