Deb Gordon’s guest was Rachel Chazin Halperin, Executive Director of Domestic Violence programs at HELP USA, which was founded by Governor Andrew Cuomo in 1986. HELP USA is the leading national developer of housing and provider of jobs and services for the homeless and supports over 300,000 domestic violence victims, veterans, families and individuals facing homelessness.

Ms. Halperin stated that domestic violence is one of the biggest reasons for homelessness in New York, and provided details about what HELP USA offers including HELP Haven, a confidential emergency shelter for women that serves as a model for many other non-profits. HELP USA also offers a variety of services and to help the survivors and their children lead productive, safe and violence-free lives. Towards that end, women receive counseling, holistic services, career and interviewing skills, and education about living in healthy relationships.

“After someone dedicates their life and service to our country, to come home and be homeless is not acceptable in civilized society”, stated Ms. Halperin discussing how the organizations works in Philadelphia, Newark, and Brooklyn to provide affordable-low income housing for a diverse group of veterans. The organization also offers supportive services that helps them with mental health issues, assists them with career development and finding jobs.

Spotlighted HELP USA’s Annual Tribute Awards Dinner, which will be held on Wednesday March 12th at 583 Park Ave and will honor individuals and organizations that support HELP USA, and are committed to ending homelessness. This year’s honorees are Lauren and Justin Tuck; A&T CEO, Randall L. Stephenson; and The Home Depot Foundation.

Former President Bill Clinton is among the past award recipients. The event is co-chaired and supported by well-known advocates and will include many special guests including Tony Bennett and Steve Buscemi.
