John Newman, the voice behind “Love Me Again,” wrote the song in an attempt win his ex-girlfriend back after cheating on her. He didn’t realize it would be a hit. When he sat down with Fresh 102.7’s afternoon host, Dylan, he talked about his new album, Tribute and why he writes what he does.

“A hit’s not a hit until it’s been a hit. I make music to be proud of, I make music to enjoy myself, I don’t really make it for any body else but when other people buy into it that’s incredible and I love that and I’m glad they do that,” said Newman.

Like any good artist, Newman draws inspiration from anything and everyone he can and he wants people to know that.

“I like people to be able to connect to me but when it comes out of my music as well. That’s the only part of the album, I wanted to explain all my influences to people and see where it came from,” said Newman.

Tribute is just that, a tribute to all of the people who have helped him create his music.

“The album is a tribute, you know you get arrogant people who have made it who say ‘yea I’ve done this all myself’ but it’s like, no, no you haven’t. You need to thank the people around you and they’ll appreciate you saying that.”

When asked about the outcome of “Love Me Again,” his apology song, he said it didn’t really go as well as he intended.

“The thing is, when you’re going through a break up you go through the one and the two, and then you finally split up, and signed, sealed delivered. It was the first time I really messed up and you know, I was ready to move on anyways, so it’s all good,” said Newman.
