Deb Gordon’s guest was Alison Kase, spokesperson for Family to Family, which was founded in 2002 with the goal of easing the burden of hunger and poverty in the poorest communities. Although Family to Family started out as a hunger relief organization, it became an integral lifeline for the people of Broad Channel, New York after their town was severely impacted by Superstorm Sandy.

Ms. Kase is a resident of Broad Channel who along with over 900 other families in the community, experienced great losses after the storm. Ms. Kase provided information about the kind of devastation that the town endured, the loss of homes and personal effects of the families who call the area home — many of whom have lived there for generations, and the way Family to Family helped them during their time of need.

Family to Family provided a variety of resources to Broad Channel immediately after the storm including household essentials, holiday toys for the children, holiday meals, building supplies, and much more. The relationship between the organization and the community continues today.

Also discussed were some of the other services Family to Family provides including the 12 Months of Giving initiative, which kicks off in September, to help underprivileged children by providing them with books, clothing and literacy experiences.

Although many months have passed since Sandy, many people are still suffering and Ms. Kase asked listeners not to forget about the many people, including seniors, who are still displaced from their homes and recovering from their losses.
