A Great Big World Adds Flair To Pop Music

Remember that time when your best friend’s cousin actually used to take polka classes with your boyfriend’s brother’s roommate? Small world, right?

Well according to these guys, it’s A Great Big World.

The duo, made up of Ian Axel and Chad Vaccarino, just released their break-out hit, “This Is The New Year,” this year and will be performing at Fresh 102.7’s Fresh In The Park.

But before all their success, the boys were students at NYU pursuing a degree in music business.

Axel immediately saw potential in partnering with Chad, but Vaccarino didn’t jump on the opportunity as quickly.

“I kept blowing him off for awhile, and then one day I heard him singing nervously at the piano,” Chad said on the band’s website. “I was like, ‘your voice is amazing. Let’s work on these songs. Let’s be friends.’”

Ian said he kind of “forced his friendship” onto Chad, but, considering how well they’re doing, it may have been worth the gamble.

“Our friendship is super special,” Ian said. “I feel like we’ve known each other forever.”

Initially, Ian was the artist and Chad co-wrote and became the manager for the band. Chad even payed for Ian’s first voice lesson. The boys have opened for Ingrid Michaelson, Five For Fighting, and Glee star Matthew Morrison.

The duo recreated themselves in 2012 and crafted a six-song EP of hopeful, upbeat songs funded entirely on Kickstarter by fans.

“Writing is our therapy,” Ian said. “And when we can connect with people through our music, it’s transformational. We’re not alone. Our songs are your songs. And that’s what it’s all about.”
