U.K. singer Emeli Sande is riding high on the news that her debut album ‘Our Version of Events’ has toppled a 50 year record in her home country, knocking The Beatles‘ ‘Please, Please Me’ out of the top spot (62 weeks) for the most consecutive weeks spent in the top 10 singles chart.

“It feels surreal. To be mentioned in the same sentence as The Beatles is quite phenomenal,” Emeli told a small room of fans during her “Up Close and Personal” concert for Fresh 102.7 listeners at the iconic Electric Lady Studios in NYC.

“For me, especially back home, it makes such a connection and has legs of it’s own. It’s not something a record company can really push, that connection. That makes me very happy.”

Emeli stuck around for a while to answer a small barrage of questions submitted by the audience, giving some insight into her personal life.

What’s the difference between U.S. and U.K. fans?

“The main difference we’ve found as a band is the audience is not shy at all! It’s great to feel the energy back. I think in the U.K. we’re a little more shy.”

Do you sing in the shower?

“Yes I sing in the shower but it’s always when I realize that I know the lyrics to any songs at all, apart from my own…. usually it’s old soul stuff but I do need to learn some lyrics.”

Have you ever forgotten lyrics on stage?

“Yes! You just kind of try to style it out, you repeat the same line with emphasis this time… you try to make it look like it was on purpose!”

Music was not always on Emeli’s career path; the singer currently holds a degree in Neuroscience. Emeli tells the audience what made her choose music over medicine:

“I loved studying medicine. It was fascinating and I loved being challenged everyday… but I think it was one student in particular who had always wanted to be a doctor. I just envied his passion and I knew that was how I felt about music” says Sande. “I thought ‘I want to live my life like that.’ I guess he inspired me to follow my dreams.”

“I love Tracy Chapman, I love Lauryn Hill,” Sande says about collaborating with other musicians. “People that I really respect as writers; I would love to at least have a conversation with [them] about the process. If you’ve written a song that’s classic and has lived for decades, those are the people I’d like to spend time with.”

Emeli Sande will be back in the NYC area on tour this summer. Stay connected to find out dates as they become available.
