Gin Wigmore Discusses Her Musical Roots In Studio With Dylan

Kiwi alt/pop-rock singer/songwriter Gin Wigmore stopped by the Fresh 102.7 studios to discuss how she got started in the music biz with Fresh 102.7’s afternoon host, Dylan.

“I started when I was 13-years-old, but it was all pretty average at that age. And then I actually started to live life and have experiences so I got serious at about 20,” she said.

A few years later, Gin wrote a song called ‘Hallelujah,’ a tribute to her father. Her sister entered the song into an international songwriting competition. And that’s when doors began opening for her.

“After I wrote ‘Hallelujah’ and won this international songwriting competition, I got flown off to the states. And I was wooed by all these record labels – Epic Records and all these other labels. I was too young – I had two songs,” she said.

Having only been 18, Gin decided not to accept any record deals and headed back home to develop as a person as well as a musician a bit more.

“I came back to New Zealand and I grew up for about 3 years. I was young and stupid and did many stupid things,” she said.

And thank goodness for that. All of Gin’s experiences from the next few years of her life were the inspiration for “Holy Smoke,” her first full length album. Gin’s sophomore album, “Wine & Gravel,” which took her about six months to a year to produce, is a bit more personal than her previous material.

“I like to just lock myself away in solitude and start with lyrics. I think about what I should write about and what’s effected me and [what’s] meaningful to me. I find being by myself I could really get inside my head a lot quicker,” she said.
