There are few things New Yorkers are more passionate about than food and the desire to heat up one of their favorite pastimes is at an all time high. If you have a fire in your belly and a knack for watching Scovilles instead of calories, the 1st Annual New York City Hot Sauce Expo is the place to be this weekend.

The two-day event begins this Saturday (April 20) at 10 AM at East River State Park, right off the Williamsburg waterfront. Several special events are scheduled for the entire weekend: Evil Seed Sauce Company‘s Peanut Brittle Challenge, the Volcanic Fiery Pizza Eating Challenge sponsored by I love It Spicy, Volcanic Peppers and Grimaldi’s Pizza, and a Michelada (Mexican term for beer mixed with tomato juice, hot sauce, or salsa) competition sponsored by Corona. Saturday’s festivities will be capped by the Screaming Mi Mi Awards Show, which will crown the best hot sauces from 11 different categories.

Sunday’s events will include a Spicy Cookie Challenge sponsored by Heartbreaking Dawns, a VIP Only Bloody Mary Mix Down Challenge with Tito’s Vodka and High River Sauces, plus a Brownie Eating Contest sponsored by Rippin Red Hot Sauce.

General admission tickets can be purchased for $10/day and $100/day for the VIP Lounge. The VIP Lounge passes include a VIP gift bag, free bottle of High River Sauces, subscription to Chile Pepper Magazine, coat check, private bathrooms, sample foods, craft beer tastings and an open bar. You can purchase tickets HERE.

On April 3rd, Fresh 102.7 afternoon personality Dylan stopped in to Jimmy’s No. 43 for the exclusive press preview for the 1st Annual New York City Hot Sauce Expo. Along with sampling numerous hot sauces himself, Dylan spoke with expo founders Steve and Lisa Seabury.

“I travel all over the country doing hot sauce expos,” says Steve Seabury. “And I was like, ‘Why do I always have to drive somewhere to do this when I could live in the best city in the world?'”

In addition to over 100 sauces at the expo, there will be countless hot sauce friendly foods and craft beer, including Brooklyn’s Sixpoint Brewery, to cleanse your pallet.

April 3rd’s event included a special backroom tasting of the sauces in competition for the first ever Screaming Mi Mi Awards, judged by food industry dignitaries like Fox’s MasterChef alum and New York native Derrick Prince.
