After the recent horrifying video involving a man attacking his wife with a meat cleaver in Chinatown, Deb Gordon, once again, highlighted the issue of domestic violence. Her guest was Laurel Eisner, the Executive Director of Sanctuary for Families. Each year, Sanctuary for Families helps thousands of victims and their children build safe lives through a range of services, including clinical and legal services, economic empowerment, outreach, and advocacy.
While Ms. Eisner refrained from commenting in detail about the aforementioned incident, she did acknowledge that the man was out of control and exhibited the kind of aggression that many other women face at the hands of their abusers. Ms. Eisner also stressed that although most domestic violence cases involve men and women, there are also a growing number of cases involving same sex couples.
Also discussed were the impact of domestic violence on immigrant communities and the services that Sanctuary provides to ensure they get help in the language they speak and are made aware of the resources and services available to them. Sanctuary for Families offers a helpline, shelters and safe havens for women and children of domestic and sexual abuse, and after care which helps these women transition into a new life.
Ms. Eisner also provided information about the organization’s work providing children with their own counseling and services to help break the cycle of violence. Data shows kids who experience or witness domestic violence, are more likely to abuse their partners and children as adults. Ms. Eisner talked about the Rihanna/Chris Brown case and how it affected young people after the story initially broke, and the impact the news of their reconciliation can also have. Sanctuary for Families offers unique programs for teens and young adults who may also be experiencing abuse at the hands of a mate.
If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic abuse, call the Sanctuary for Families helpline at 212-349-6009. You can find more information including a list of some possible signs of abuse by visiting www.sanctuaryforfamilies.org.
