This Week On FM Magazine: New York Cares Needs Coats and Volunteers for Hurricane Sandy Victims

Deb Gordon’s guest was Gary Bagley, Executive Director of New York Cares, which is the city’s leading volunteer organization and works to identify the most pressing needs of New Yorkers in all 5 boroughs to discern where their volunteers can make a difference and best serve the community.

Mr. Bagley spotlighted the organization’s efforts to help the community both during Hurricane Sandy and in the recovery phase.  Mr. Bagley discussed some of the ways New York Cares mobilized thousands of volunteers during the hurricane to help homebound seniors get food.  The volunteers are currently working in the hardest hit areas like the Rockaways and Staten Island, helping residents rebuild their lives.

Also spotlighted was their annual coat drive, which allows the organization to provide coats to needy New Yorkers.  The coat drive start date was moved up this year to help those who lost clothing after Sandy and will go through December 31st.  Mr. Bagley stressed the need for the community to donate — especially large men’s coats and children’s/toddler’s coats.  There are drop off locations in all 5 boroughs which include all police precincts and many public libraries.

New York Cares will need about 100 volunteers every day for the next 6 months and even more on the weekends to do a variety of things including cleaning homes so that displaced tenants can move back in, and counting coats.
