Newark Mayor: Public Memorial at Prudential Center for Whitney Houston Cancelled

Abiding by the wishes of the Houston family, Newark, New Jersey Mayor Cory Booker has announced that there will be no public service for Whitney Houston held at the Prudential Center.

It was rumored that the 18,000 seat venue was to hold a service for fans of the late pop singer to attend, but that is no longer the case because “Whitney’s family didn’t want one.”

A rep for the Mayor’s office tells TMZ, “The Houston family has no plans to set up a public viewing at the Prudential Center this Friday.”

Only a private service for the family has been confirmed, which will be held at noon this Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church, 106 Sussex Avenue in Newark, New Jersey.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie stated Houston is in the class of other New Jersey music icons such as Frank Sinatra and Bruce Springsteen, whose “accomplishments in her life were a source of great pride for many people in this state.”

For that reason the governor has decided that flags will be flown at half-staff at the state’s government buildings in her honor on the day of the burial.
