On The Beatles’ first single, “Love Me Do,” that’s not even Ringo playing. They used a studio drummer, because Martin didn’t even have time to audition Ringo before cutting the record. But that was the last time you didn’t hear Ringo on a Beatle record. Martin really liked Ringo’s “super-steady beat” and the sound it gave the records.

  1. Jason Gilbert says:

Correction, Ms. Bradley: “Love Me Do” was not the last time we didn’t hear Ringo on a Beatles record. Ringo also didn’t play on some of the tracks recorded during the “White Album” period, such as “Dear Prudence,” when he quit the band for that brief period. “Dear Prudence” featured Paul on drums. Also, John and Paul were the only two Beatles to play on “The Ballad of John and Yoko,” which also had Paul on drums.

In any event, Starr does play on “Love Me Do,” albeit on tambourine, while session player Andy White played drums. Ringo did play drums on an earlier recording of “Love Me Do” which was released as a single at the time and appears on the compilation CD “Past Masters I.”

    Happy birthday, George Martin!
