When 14-year-old Jamey Rodemeyer of upstate New York committed suicide on Sunday, a result of years of bullying focused on his sexuality, it hit Gaga hard. Rodemeyer was a huge fan of Lady Gaga, and now Lady Gaga is a huge fan of Jamey… linking on Twitter to a series of anti-bullying YouTube videos the young man made to help others in his situation.

Her Twitter feed reads like an homage to Jamey; she even announced that she has arranged a meeting with President Obama to discuss making bullying illegal, as are other “hate crimes.”

According to CBS News, Jamey’s mother Tracy Rodemeyer plans on burying her son tomorrow in a Lady Gaga “Born this Way” t-shirt.

I’m not saying I’m for bullying or anything, but to make bullying illegal is infringing individual rights, as well as the freedom of speech without too much government involvement, though unethical and immoral, is a bit extreme. Not only that, but what would the legal definition of the consequences of bullying, will a minor be jailed or the parents jailed? Fined? Ok, but how much? Who’s going to be the “police” for bullying cases? Are we all going to be monitored now, therefore, infringing on the rights of individual privacy, which I thought is a very important factor in everyone’s life.

I’m sorry, Lady Gaga, I know your heart is in the right place, but I’m not exactly sure how you plan to make this work legally and without a lot of constitutional foundation….

I would like to know if this statement of hers is still active. Bullying is becomeing a bigger thing where I live, and Ihave decided to write an article for my school newspaper about this statement. I want to know is her word is true- will she acctually talk to the president?
This making ‘bullying’ illeagal… How is it going to work? We cant monitor every single persons actions to no end, thats like trying to create a utopian society- it will only end dystopian. I do agree with her however that bullying is a hate crime. It sould be stopped. I’ve tried to kill myself three times because of it. Its horrible to be tortured every single day, and to not get any rest from it, when you are in the safety of your own-they will still attack you through the internet. Bullying is NOT RIGHT. But to make it illeagl? It seems almost impossible.
