Theater Review: War Horse On Broadway

I knew when War Horse won the TONY for Best Play this year, it had to move to the top of my theater to-do list. This show is so good that Steven Spielberg is making the movie that will be in theaters this Christmas.

Read on to find out what makes War Horse so amazing and why I think it needs to be at the top of your list as well!

War Horse is the story of a boy and his horse that takes place in Europe during World War I. The story was written to showcase the story of the MILLIONS of horses that were lost during the war. You spend the beginning of the show watching Joey (the horse) and his owner bonding until Joey is sold into the way by the boy’s father. Heartbroken, the boy sets out on a journey to find Joey and bring him home.

War Horse shows the emotional journey the boy goes on through the battlefields of World War I to try and find Joey.

This show actually scored FIVE TONY’s this year: Best Play, Best Direction (Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris), Best Scenic Design (Rae Smith), Best Lighting Design (Paule Constable) and Best Sound Design (Christopher Shutt) as well as a Special Tony Award to Handspring Puppet Company. The fact that it takes three people to operate ONE horse was amazing. The details on these puppets can’t be explained in words. Their deep eyes appear to have souls that you can get lost in, a breathtaking touch to a nearly-perfect production.

The one criticism I have about War Horse is how difficult it is to portray a WAR on stage. It’s not the production’s fault and they actually did a great job at trying to show WWI on stage. Unfortunately for them, the war scenes were not that impressive and required a lot of imagination from the audience. I’m looking forward to seeing the movie for the simple fact the war scenes will be AWESOME!

War Horse is at Lincoln Center and you can grab tickets here >

Check out the trailer for what I’m guessing will be the biggest movie this Christmas below…
