What’s Fresh Around Town for this Weekend: Puerto Rican Day Parade is Sunday!

The 2011 National Puerto Rican Day Parade is this Sunday!  That’s sure to be the biggest event in a weekend FILLED with tons of fun things to do!  Check out Jim and Kim’s complete list of What’s Fresh Around Town after the jump!

1. Tomorrow is the Long Island City Bike Parade! 

It’s a full day of bike events that starts at 11am with the Kids’ Bike Swap. For a second year, Recycle-A-Bicycle will also host the event. Children who have outgrown their bicycles or have extra gently-used bikes to donate, are invited to bring their bike to Hallets Cove Playground and swap it in exchange for another gently-used bike. At approximately 3pm, the parade begins along Vernon Blvd., leaving from Socrates Broadway gate.

2. World Naked Bike Ride

Tired of biking to work only to find yourself sweating through your clothes? This weekend you’re invited to cool down with the annual World Naked Bike Ride. Chance of chafing: 100%!   Participants are told to “wear what you wish,” and in the past many have gone the full monty. If you want to join them, or take some photos, riders will be meeting at the Time’s Up headquarters under the Williamsburg Bridge at 3 p.m.; there will be a bike and body decorating party prior to take-off.

4. Twilight: Eclipse Outdoor Screening!

Free screening of Twilight: Eclipse (outdoors, weather permitting) at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Hamilton Fish Recreation Center

5. 32nd Annual Mississippi Picnic in Central Park at the Bandshell

Saturday is the 32nd Annual Mississippi Picnic in Central Park at the Bandshell. The picnic will feature many of Mississippi’s most talented artists displaying and selling their artwork, Mississippi writers signing their books, as well as the ever-popular delicious southern cuisine featuring a “Taste of Mississippi.”.  That starts at noon.

6. Horseys!

There will be no Triple Crown run again this year, but at least we have the two winners of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness going head-to-head at the 2011 Belmont Stakes on Saturday.  It is the 143rd annual race at Belmont Park.  It starts at approximately 11:35.

7. Egg Rolls & Egg Creams!

The Egg Rolls & Egg Creams festival is Sunday at noon!  Look for chinese opera and acrobatics, klezmer music, Yiddish and Chinese language lessons, scribal arts, food and folk art demos, crafts, synagogue tours, and more! Don’t miss New York City’s best block party, a cross-cultural celebration of the Jewish and Chinese communities of our Lower East Side/Chinatown neighbourhood.

8. Mmmmm… hummus!

Sunday is “The Middle Feast” a hummus-tasting competition and the only Middle East battle worth fighting! The centerpiece, of course, are the chickpea-based dishes made by New York City’s finest hummus chefs. The chefs will be creating their signature hummus dishes, pitas and homemade breads for Openhouse’s Middle Feast.  That’s at 11am at 201 Mulberry Street.

9. The National Puerto Rican Day Parade is Sunday! 

It’s the successor to the New York Puerto Rican Day Parade, an event that operated for thirty-eight (38) consecutive years, enhancing the pride of the Puerto Rican people and promoting their contributions to the United States.   Look for it to start at 11am an run up Fifth avenue from 44th Street to 86th street.

Don’t have a place to watch the Tony Awards? Well, there’s a free Times Square simulcast on Sunday night. The simulcast will take place, rain or shine, with full audio with seating available, starting at 5:30 p.m. in Duffy Square, throughout the evening.
