[pullquote quote=”Any Nation that does not honor its heroes will not long endure. ” credit=”Abraham Lincoln”]On this Memorial Day, we remember those Americans who gave their lives serving to protect our freedom, and we honor those who are in service today, and the families and loved ones that support them.  Here are a few suggestions on ways that you can help remember and observe Memorial Day. See a special musical video of the USAF Band performing “Taps” at Arlington National Cemetery.

  1. You can send thank you flower bouquets to National War Memorials, such as the DC World War I Memorial, or the National World War II Memorial through the Memorial Day foundation. One bouquet is $15, and you can also include a gift card message. For more information go to www.memorialdayfoundation.org.
  2. Hang a flag for the holiday. On Memorial Day, the flag is displayed at half staff until noon and at full staff from noon to sunset. But remember, to place it at half staff, hoist it to the peak for an instant and lower it half way between the top and bottom of the staff. The flag is to be raised again to the peak before it is lowered. When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms, according to proper flag etiquette.
  3. Pay tribute to the U.S. men and women who died during military service by observing a minute of silence at 3 p.m.

“Taps” Buglers, past and present, at Arlington National Cemetery who sound the twenty four notes of Taps in all types of weather paying tribute to those who have served. Music is “Amazing Grace” arranged by Jari Villanueva and performed by the USAF Band. “Taps” is sounded on an original Civil War clairon.
