Howling to the heavens that Friday is the most awesome day of the week is a cliché for a reason–because for most people it’s true. It’s time to decompress, get your party on, maybe even tear up a dancefloor or two. Even if that dancefloor is just your living room.

In honor of the usually frightening Friday the 13th folk tales, we took our time machine back to a year when dance music was fun, upbeat, and positive: 1990. No better way to balance out the bad juju with some party rock mojo from artists like [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Madonna[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Janet Jackson[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]C+C Music Factory[/lastfm], and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Deee-Lite[/lastfm].

Alright, stop. Collaborate and listen. Although Vanilla Ice a.k.a Robert Matthew Van Winkle is basically a household name right now after appearing on multiple reality television shows and having an infamous career as one of the first “white rappers,” in Van Winkle’s “Ice Ice Baby” era he was just making a name for himself.

9. “U Can’t Touch This”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]MC Hammer[/lastfm]

Take out your neon orange/fuchsia/lime gilt gold hammer pants, rock a side ponytail, some brown lipstick, and do the running man to MC Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This.”

8. “Love Shack”-[lastm]The B-52’s[/lastfm]

Glitter on the mattress, glitter on the highway. It’s time to go-go dance until the dawn! In the world of the B-52’s if there wasn’t glitter all over everything and an absurd ’60s-style dance party in a shack that looked like Pee-Wee Herman built it, then you were doing life wrong.

We vividly remember wanting to “grow up” and become just like The B-52’s because their lives just seemed so infectiously fun.

7.”Wiggle It”- [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]2 In A Room[/lastfm]

Even to this day, we always have the chorus of this song stuck in our head and we totally forgot how it had implanted itself in our brains. It, well, somehow wiggled itself in there.

With upbeat lyrics like, “As it grooves/your body moves/and it starts to get the feeling/and that feeling is happiness,” we’re totally OK with that.

5. “All Around The World”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Lisa Stanfield[/lastfm]Photo by Anthony Harvey//Getty Images”]en vogue carlo allegri gety images Flashback Dance Party: 10 Retro Dance Jams From 1990Another one of those songs where the chorus is forever implanted in our heads, there was a little debate over whether this was actually considered a dance song.

We vividly remember this being the song that the DJ pulled out at the end of the night when everyone was cooling down. Maybe we were all slow dancing, but we were dancing.

4. “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)”- [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]C+C Music Factory[/lastfm]

3. “Rhythm Nation”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Janet Jackson[/lastfm]Photo by Wayne Wilson//Getty ImagesWe’re sorry Miss Jackson, you are probably tired of hearing this, but you are one of our heroes. “Rhythm Nation” was just one of the amazing songs Janet Jackson came out with in the early ’90s–all of them dance party material. [vevo][/vevo]2. “Groove Is In The Heart”-[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Deee-Lite[/lastfm]Photo by Evan Agostini//Getty ImagesSpeaking of female heroes, Lady Miss Kier from Dee-lite was the precursor to [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Lady Gaga[/lastfm]/[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Katy Perry[/lastfm]/any pop diva  in the ’00s. She had amazing theatrical style that was a mixture of Candyland Lolita and mod sexpot robot. From what we’ve read, Lady Miss Kier is still out there with plenty of “groove” in her heart to give to the world. How do you say de-groovy? Probably the most famous dance song about dancing ever to hit the dance world. 1990 was a good year.
