Ex-Fugees member and current face man for shady charities, Wyclef Jean, is getting set to announce his candidacy for president of Haiti this Thursday on CNN‘s Larry King Live, the former head of the country’s Chamber of Deputies has confirmed.

This oughtta work out well…

Wyclef recently told TIME Magazine: “If not for the earthquake, I probably would have waited another 10 years before doing this. The quake drove home to me that Haiti can’t wait another 10 years for us to bring it into the 21st century. If I can’t take five years out to serve my country as president, then everything I’ve been singing about, like equal rights, doesn’t mean anything.”

Wyclef’s people wouldn’t confirm the latest reports but did acknowledge that he will be making an announcement on Thursday.

[lastfm]Wyclef Jean[/lastfm], now 37-years-old, was born in Haiti but left as soon as his family could. Anyway, Wyclef is a popular figure in his home country; his “charity work” after the devastating January 12th earthquake has made him a favorite among many locals, although his long-standing Yele Haiti foundation has come under fire for having some shady financial practices.

To run for president, Wyclef has to prove that he’s lived in Haiti for five consecutive years, that he owns property in the country and that he has no other citizenship but Haitian. All candidates must register with the Haitian electoral council by Saturday, August 7th.

So far, Wyclef has not filed.
